Apple doesn’t want adult content, Freud isn’t amused…

Well it finally happened, most of that objectionable content has now been taken down from the Appstore. Apparently this bold move was accompanied by lot’s of complaints from people who quite clearly didn’t see the age content warnings, and nor did they apparently know about the parental controls in their iPhones (hint, tap settings, restrictions and you can set your parental controls in there)

This hit a nerve for me in many respects, not least of which is the fact that, unbelievably, I am an adult. Whilst I don’t download pornography for the iPhone, I do use applications like Asylum, which is essentially an iPhone version of FHM. Similarly other mens magazines were going to follow suit with an app which is now not possible. No more will we see the beautiful italian super-cars draped with show girls and no more will we see tastefully dressed women in swimsuits advertising the latest surfing gear.

See Apple, there ARE other applications out there that are not exactly pornographic, and considering using scantily clad women to spice up an image is actually part of mainstream magazine culture, I’m surprised that apple didn’t just ban explicit apps. Ok yes, I know, I’m a little bit of a hypocrite as the first application I reviewed for apptacious was of BikiniHunt, but hey it was my first review, even that wasn’t exactly obscene.

Personally I think Apple have gone slightly too far since they have gone above and beyond the moral requirement of parental controls. Your iTunes has parental controls, and so does the iPhone and iPod touch, so why do they have to do this? Sex does sell, and apple is potentially missing out of a huge market. Maybe it’s because the applications don’t carry PEGI or BBFC ratings…
